Why kitesurfing in Indonesia is a good choice ?

Indonesia is a must for a surf trip, but is often less exploited when it comes to a kite trip. This is understandable, because while waves are present everywhere in the country, the same can’t be said for the wind. However, if you position yourself in the right place, you can enjoy superb spots and almost perfect conditions.

To give an idea, Indonesia is located in the Indian Ocean, south of Malaysia (and thus on a larger scale, south of Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam). It is the largest archipelago in the world, with more than 13,000 islands (only 6,000 are inhabited).

The largest islands are Sumatra, Celebes, Kalimantan (the Indonesian part of Borneo) and New Guinea. The other islands, smaller but very well known, are Java (where the capital Jakarta is located) and Bali.

Kiting in Indonesia: conditions and overview of spots In terms of climate, there are 2 main seasons: – the rainy season, from November to April (not recommended) – the dry season from June to October (best time to go) It should be noted that the north of the country experiences less climate difference between the two seasons than the south.

In terms of wind, it is generally present during the dry season, from June to October, with variations depending on the location.

In terms of water conditions, we are most often on wave spots of course. But you can also find good flat spots in certain locations.

Best period and spots to kite in Indonesia

There are several regions / places to kite, each place being very different from the others. Among others, we have:

– Bali and its neighbor Lombok

– Sumbawa Island with the famous Lakey Peak spot

– Sumatra Island, with the northern region of Banda Aceh

– The Celebes (Sulawesi) with notably the Palu spot

Best wind season: from June to October with variations depending on the spots

In conclusion, while waves are present throughout the country, the same cannot be said for wind. However, if you find yourself in the right place at the right time, there are opportunities to enjoy superb spots and almost perfect conditions. Bali is worth considering for families or if you want to alternate between sessions and visits. Sumbawa – Lakey Peak is for wave and nature lovers. Sumatra – Banda Aceh offers versatile conditions.
