Kitesurf at Kerhilio

Kitesurf spot in France

Kerhilio: kite spot summary

The Kerhilio spot is located at the entrance of the Quiberon peninsula, on the north side (towards Lorient).

It is one of the 3 beaches in the town of Erdeven and is the most famous spot in the region, with beautiful waves at high tide and an ideal freeride and bump & jump water plan.

It is a fairly safe spot as there are hardly any rocks, you can navigate regardless of the tide and it is a sandy beach that stretches for kilometers.

However, be careful in the summer because there is a well-defined kite zone that must be respected.

There is plenty of space at this spot, both in the water and on the beach for setup, making the space enjoyable. There is little to no interference, except possibly in the summer.

The spot is ideal for northwest or west winds, with a side-on to side starboard orientation. But sometimes you can sail with other orientations given the configuration.

Beware of the current which can sometimes be strong, and generally pulls towards the peninsula. Even though there are no immediate dangers due to the large spaces, you still need to be careful.

I spent a week at this spot, and I stayed at the municipal campsite just behind the dune. The campsite is basically a large grassy plain with additional sanitary facilities. I was lucky to have not many people there at that time, and wind every day!

Off-season, for those who arrive with vans, there is the possibility of staying in the parking lots around without being too disturbed.

Recommended kite size and wind: It’s difficult to generalize, it really depends on the day.

In the summer, a 12m kite is often recommended. The rest of the time, it’s usually the 9/10m kites that are out, with a 7 for stronger winds.

In Brittany, it’s a popular spot. There are so many different spots in the region. If you want to discover them, you can also visit my Brittany kite spots page for an overview of the possibilities!

A kite spot for every day of the year! In autumn, beautiful depressions arrive, which reach Brittany until the end of winter, and deliver very good sessions. In summer, you will have to rely more on thermals on sunny days.
