Le Crotoy: kite spot summary
The Crotoy spot is located at the entrance of the Somme Bay, on the north side (a few kilometers south of Berck). It is one of the most accessible spots from Paris, about 200 km away.
It is a good freeride spot, which is really accessible for beginners: there is generally little depth, the slope is gentle and sandy, the beach is huge and the water is rather flat (choppy depending on the wind). It is therefore ideal for improving gradually and safely.
However, you can only sail around high tide, otherwise there is no water: count on about 1 to 2 hours before and after.
Beware of the ebbing tide, the sand banks slowly uncover, do not crash into them thinking there is more water!
To get there, take the Abbevile Nord exit from the A16, then follow the Crotoy. The beach is well signposted and there is plenty of parking in the area.
Operation: The best wind direction for kiting there is west. But you can also go there with a southwest wind (onshore) up to northwest (side). Here too, kiters are often on the right side of the water and windsurfers on the left, but the spot is large and everyone finds their own space.
Recommended kite size: Difficult to generalize. You should check the forecasts before going. In winter, it is usually 7/9 – In summer, 12+.
