Witsand: kite spot summary
The Witsand spot is one of the top freestyle spots in South Africa: nestled behind a sand dune, you can kite in a sort of huge almost closed bay, completely flat because of the offshore wind. (the wind is quite regular, and the best orientations are the variations of east (especially south-east), the most common in season). This spot is located about 3 hours east of Cape Town (300kms), at the mouth of the Bree River. Like much of the South African coast, the place is as undeveloped as it is sparsely populated, offering a tranquil and exotic setting. The village of Witsand is very small, and secluded from the rest of the world. A spot for all levels, ideal for freestyle and learning. Freeride and wave enthusiasts can try kiting on the other side of the dune, towards the ocean (small to medium waves).
In case of no wind (or just if you feel like something different), you can also do wakeboarding and SUP on site! Pros: flat water – few people – beautiful setting – water warmer than in Cape Town
Cons: not much to do nearby – isolated
