Kitesurf at Sumbawa, Lakey Peak

Kitesurf spot in Indonesia

Sumbawa, Lakey Peak: kite spot summary

Sumbawa is an island in southern Indonesia, part of the Sunda Islands archipelago. It is close to Bali, and is surrounded by the islands of Lombok to the west and Flores to the east.

The island covers more than 15,000 km2 (about 2 times the size of Bali) and is more or less divided into 2 parts by an isthmus: East Sumbawa and West Sumbawa.

This island is much less visited than its neighbors, especially Bali, because it is still underdeveloped. However, it is a great destination for a kite trip, especially around Lakey Peak.

Kite spots in Sumbawa – Lakey Peak spot

It is located in the south of the island of Sumbawa, more or less in the middle, between the west and east parts, and close to the town of Hu Hu. It is one of the most famous surf spots in the region, offering perfect conditions. However, it is reserved for experts as the wave is fast, breaks on the reef, and there are often many surfers in the water.

At this location, the sea is turquoise, the sand is very white, and you can access the peaks by passing through 2 channels along the lagoon. The waves break on the reef. Be careful at low tide, there is very little to no water.

Spot configuration

In terms of peaks, there are:

– The Peak, the main one. It often has 2 to 4m waves.
– The Pipe, to the left of The Peak, offers very nice fast lefts.
– Nungas, to the right of The Peak, generally offers smaller but longer waves than the previous 2 peaks. There is a lot of current in this area, so generally few surfers, making it ideal for kiteboarding.

Things to do nearby: There is almost nothing else to do besides kiteboarding and surfing. There are some guest houses/hotels on site, and a few small eateries, but that’s about it.

Equipment: The wind can be quite strong, so bring a 7 and a 10 or an 8 and an 11 depending on your size.
