Kitesurf at Santa Veronica

Kitesurf spot in Colombia

Santa Veronica: kite spot summary

The kite spot of Santa Veronica is located north of Colombia, on the Caribbean coast, between the cities of Cartagena (80kms) and Barranquilla (50kms). It is an authentic and preserved spot, still sheltered from mass tourism and offers superb kite conditions (strong and consistent wind most of the year).

The place is renowned among kiters, and for good reason, the wind stats are truly exceptional and the atmosphere is exotic. The people here are happy to see kite and windsurfing develop. They are very curious and want to try it themselves!

The spot forms a large bay (sandy bottom with a few rocky points), with side-on wind that secures the spot.

Several spots depending on the desired sailing program: – Wave zones: Olas Inn with beautiful rolling waves and a flat zone in the back of the bay, the other in front of casa agua de vela – Freeride zones Puerto Velero or in the bay of Santa Veronica, with shorter and more powerful waves, you can also do downwinds to discover the coast. – Some flat areas, ideal for learning (with a school)

The waves roll cleanly, ideal for riders looking to improve. There are few people in the water and the level is accessible.

Most of the time in winter, there are 1 to 2 meters of waves depending on the spots and days, but the spot remains extremely easy and accessible (it’s still better if you already know how to ride a bit and go upwind). A large lagoon also exists 10 km away, with flat water for learning.

In short, there is something for everyone: freeride, strapless surfing or not, and it’s perfect for beginners and progressing in waves. No particular danger, the water is warm and the spots are still almost untouched.

Riders appreciate the space on the spots, the tranquility in the waves, the feeling of being at the end of the world while being very close to the big cities, and the certainty of kiting every day.

The village of Santa Veronica is a typical small village in this part of Colombia, bordered by palm trees and small local restaurants (ideal for tasting grilled fish and having a drink in front of the spot).

NB: it is sunny and hot, but as the wind is strong, do not hesitate to take a lycra for the last sailing sessions of the day.

Kite size: for a weight of around 75kg, plan on a 7 as a base kite. A 9 will complement the quiver for the morning or days with less wind. It is a destination where the wind blows, small kites are welcome!

Best season for kiting: from December to May (but it also sails the rest of the year).

The highlights of the region? Wind from December to July, 25 to 35 knots every day from January to March, waves ranging from 1.5m to 2.5m, water at 26°C, and an outside temperature of around 28°/30°.
