Kitesurf at Cabo de la vela

The kite spot of Cabo de la Vela is located at the extreme north of Colombia, in the Guajira desert. It is a spot that is well worth the effort to access, even though it can be complicated.

Cabo de la Vela is nicknamed “the Cape Horn of the Antilles”: at this location, the mountains of the Andes Cordillera are at the edge of the sea, causing the wind to be compressed by these mountains and undergo a strong acceleration… This results in consistent wind and offshore swell. (but also some flat water with chop in the bay in front of the spot).

The spot consists of a large bay with white sand (some areas with algae to avoid in order not to get stung by certain venomous fish). There are a few fishermen’s huts on the beach to eat lunch.

The wind blows strong there for a good part of the year (25/30 knots guaranteed, sometimes with stronger conditions). It is better to bring smaller kite sizes (a 7m kite is usually the basic size, along with a 9m for a perfect quiver).

The place is still wild and authentic, offering a “nature” trip that will leave you with many memories.

It is ideal to plan at least 2 weeks to visit this place, as access is difficult: you first need to go to the city of Riocha (by plane or by road – 7 hours from Cartagena and 3 hours from Santa Marta). Then take a 4×4 to Cabo de la Vela.

Best season for kitesurfing: from December to June/July (but it is also possible to kitesurf during the rest of the year).
