Vieux fort, Savannes bay: kite spot summary
The spot of Savannes Bay is located in the South of the island of Saint Lucia. It is on the East side of the peninsula, close to Sandy Beach.
At this spot, the wind is side-on and the water conditions range from flat to Bump and Jump (it’s flat at low tide, especially north of the point, and choppy at high tide). There are some waves on the reef, although they don’t break very cleanly.
The wind is generally constant throughout the day with a drop around lunchtime (perfect for taking a nap). It can sometimes come in very strong at this spot, so check the forecast before heading out. It’s best to bring a 7, 9, and 12 in your quiver.
The spot of Savannes Bay is located close to Sandy Beach, which is slightly further south.
Further south, there are two additional spots: The Reef Club spot at Sandy Beach & The Coconut Bay Hotel Club spot, located a 30-minute walk from the first spot.
The Reef spot:
This spot is located on Sandy Beach, at the extreme south of the island (on the East side of the point). It is easily accessible by the main road, just a few meters from the road.
The setting is beautiful: a white sandy beach (which is not so common in Saint Lucia), turquoise sea, a superb backdrop with the proximity of 2 islets, and a view of the Pitons in the distance when you move away.
The water conditions, however, are very Bump and Jump, don’t expect flat water… The wind is side/side-on, making the spot very safe (in case of trouble, you always end up in the protected bay).
There is a small snack bar at the spot and a club (The Reef) that rents kite and windsurfing equipment.
The Coconut Bay Hotel spot:
The other spot is located about a 30-minute walk from Sandy Beach, heading up the east coast. The spot is in front of the Coconut Bay Hotel nautical club.
To access it, there are 2 ways:
– either by car through the hotel, but you have to pay $30/day just for access and storage (or $80 for full access to the hotel, restaurant, etc.)
– Or by walking along the beach, and you don’t pay anything… (it takes us about 20 minutes, each morning and evening, with equipment on our backs).
The spot is flatter than Sandy Beach, especially at low tide! (it can get pretty choppy at high tide). There is a smooth area above the club.
This spot allows for a mix of freestyle, wave riding on the reef, and long upwind sessions for kilometers. It’s really awesome!! The wind is side/side-on and blows fairly regularly with some strong gusts when it’s blowing hard.
Be sure to check the report before heading out:
– if windguru is in green, it’s a 12
– if windguru is in yellow = 9
– if windguru is in orange/red = 7 (it can get really windy!)
In any case, rent a car and explore on your own: Saint Lucia is one of those islands where the spots are still quite deserted and preserved.
