Gruissan: kite spot summary
La Vieille Nouvelle in Gruissan is one of the best kitesurfing spots for the Tramontane (Northwest wind) in Occitanie. This particularity becomes more and more evident as you approach the mouth of the Ayrolle, between Port la Nouvelle and Gruissan. The two hills bordering this pond channel the air flow, creating a nice venturi effect. Be careful, the wind can be very strong there!
Takeoff
The takeoff area is located just behind the spot’s parking lot. The beach is large enough, but cars are located a few dozen meters downwind. Take the time to properly connect your kite and check your equipment before launching in strong winds. The ground is a mix of shells, small stones, and some tufts of grass. When you are ready to take off, make sure your lines are not tangled.
Navigation Conditions
This spot is ideally practiced with a land wind, offering the best conditions for experts from the entire region. The conditions are so good that the Défikite (long-distance kite race) is organized there every year, attracting hundreds of athletes. The spot is very busy on weekends and during the summer, with windsurfers and kitesurfers flocking as soon as the Tramontane blows. The wind strengthens as you head west, towards Port la Nouvelle. With a land wind, the sea is smoothed over several tens of meters, perfect for speed and freestyle. With a sea wind, large waves can encroach on the beach, requiring caution.
Dangers
With a land wind, stay alert to others. Every year, many kitesurfers and windsurfers end up drifting offshore. The wind can become very violent on some days and suddenly increase in intensity. Don’t be caught off guard. Many people come to sail with offshore winds, which means staying close to shore. Be careful when crossing paths! To access the spot, you have to drive on the beach. Follow the tracks carefully to avoid getting stuck. Avoid coming to La Vieille Nouvelle during heavy rains or with a Southeast wind, as the beach is often flooded.
