Hatteras: kite spot summary
Located off the coast of North Carolina, Hatteras is a long island with spots on both the Atlantic and protected sides. Known for its vast open spaces and immense sandy beaches, Hatteras offers superb downwind opportunities that can reach up to 20 km!
There is something for everyone and every skill level: freestyle enthusiasts and beginners may prefer the protected side for its shallow flat water, while wave riders will enjoy the Ocean side.
Pros: versatility of flat/waves – immense beaches – consistent wind all year round – downwind opportunities
Cons: long journey – the area is quite touristy – localism at popular spots (Planet of the Apes)
To access Hatteras Island, you need to land at Norfolk International Airport ORF in Virginia (no direct flights from Paris), and then drive for about 3 hours. The journey is long but the destination is worth it! Time zone: UTC-4 (6 hours ahead during daylight saving time).
You can experience all conditions in the Hatteras region… as long as you have a car to move from spot to spot!
