Ilot Maître: kite spot summary
About 15 minutes by boat from Grande Terre, Ilot Maître is a large shallow lagoon protected by a reef. It’s an ideal day trip to do during your kiteboarding stay in New Caledonia.
The spot offers flat water conditions, a seabed made up of seagrass and sand, and a beautiful setting. There are also some nice waves near the Lighthouse of Ilot Maitre.
It is part of a protected natural area for its very rich ecosystem, but you can still access it all year round for kiting (unlike Ilot Goeland).
However, choose your timing wisely: Ilot Maître generally works at mid-tide or high tide with small coefficients. It’s best to avoid low tide because the coral is not far away…
Pros: flat water – boardshort navigation – turquoise lagoon – consistent wind – ideal for a day trip
Cons: not very accessible at low tide
The water taxi to Ilot Goéland departs from Anse Vata, at the end of the peninsula south of Nouméa. There is also a snack bar on the beach, convenient for those who want to refresh or grab a bite to eat during the day!
