Why kitesurfing in Mauritius is a good choice ?

Mauritius Island is located off the coast of Madagascar (to the East), and is a small (large) paradise made up of stunning landscapes, volcanoes, white sandy beaches, coral reefs, and lush vegetation. It is 2 hours away from Reunion Island (ideal for a hiking/kite combo), and 1.5 hours from Rodrigues (another little paradise for kite surfing), and it takes 12 hours direct flight (most of the time) from Paris.

In terms of seasons, the high tourist season extends from November to April because the sun shines at 100% and the water is warmer. However, this is also the cyclone season (from December to March), with more rainfall, especially on the central plateaus.

Adding to this heavenly panorama, you are lucky that Mauritius benefits from a great cultural wealth and a population known for its legendary kindness. Its ethnic diversity gives it a very strong cultural identity. It’s an ideal destination to visit with your family, as you can engage in many activities outside of your sessions (paddle, hikes, excursions, visits, beaches…) and satisfy all tastes.

Best period and spots to kite in Mauritius

At kite level, Mauritius normally offers very reliable wind conditions from June to October, and its coastline almost completely surrounded by coral reefs offers both turquoise lagoons for freestyle and world-class reef waves for waveriding experts. There are spots for all levels and tastes.

The most well-known and reputed area for kiting in Mauritius is located in the southwest of the island, at Le Morne. This area includes several renowned spots, ranging from the immense lagoon (flat to choppy) to the beautiful reef waves reserved for experienced riders (One Eye, Manawa…). Right next to it is the Bel Ombre spot, which is ideal for beginners (especially with schools that take you out by boat).

To the north of the island, there are spots like Anse La Raie, Cap Malheureux, and Trou aux Biche (reserved for experienced riders or those with a boat), while to the east there are spots like Palmar, Pointe d’Esny, and Belle Mare.

From May to October, it is the “tropical winter”, so a cooler season (and ultimately dry), but it is the best season for kiting (with temperatures still around 25°C in the air and 23°C in the water). In July and August, a shorty is recommended because with the wind, you can quickly get cold.

Additional tips

For accommodation, you have two choices:

    • either you opt for hotels, which are often quite luxurious (a good way to convince your significant other who doesn’t kite, with rather reasonable rates since it’s the “low season”).

  • or you prefer the option of a self-contained apartment, for tighter budgets.

Having a car is highly recommended (the island is 65 km long and 45 km wide and the roads are damaged), but be careful, we drive on the left here. If you really don’t want to drive, choose a hotel close to the kite spot, and you can then travel during the day via the hotel with shuttles or excursions.

A kite trip to Mauritius can be quite expensive. The big unavoidable expense is the plane tickets. You have to stay on the lookout for good deals but if you travel during school holidays (July / August) you will quickly pay between 800 and 1400€ per person. Once there, it will depend on what you are looking for: small budgets can get by with little. A small apartment, local shopping and not too many activities, while some families or couples will want more comfort, enjoy charming hotels and discover the many facets of Mauritius.

What are the best non kitesurfing activities ?

For some, Mauritius is mainly about paradise beaches. It’s true that it’s pleasant, and it can be hard to leave your luxurious resort, but Mauritius has a lot more to offer, if only for its cosmopolitan character.

For example, you can climb to the top of Le Morne to admire the view, stroll in Port Louis to see the mix of cultures, there are nice hikes like the Black River Gorges National Park. In short, when you have a few days without kite surfing, you don’t have time to get bored.
