Kerguelen: kite spot summary
The Kerguelen spot is located very close to Lorient, about 8km away, right next to Larmor Plage. It is one of the most popular spots in the area due to its central location, easy access (parking and grassy area for rigging), and ideal sailing conditions.
It works very well in west winds and offers an ideal freeride water area, sometimes with nice waves further out.
The spot is safe and has almost no dangers (except for a few rocks on the left side of the sailing area).
The advantage of Kerguelen is that in summer, the thermal wind is often stronger than elsewhere. However, be careful as there are quickly many boats and swimmers.
There is sometimes a wind shadow area at high tide near the pier, which is why it is often easier to start at mid-tide.
Recommended kite size and wind: It’s difficult to generalize, it really depends on the day. In summer, a 12m kite is often recommended. The rest of the time, it’s usually the 9/10m kites that are used, with a 7m for strong winds.
Kerguelen is just one spot among many in the great Brittany region. If you want to discover others, feel free to check out my guide to the kitesurfing spots in Brittany. And if you know of a spot that is not listed, don’t hesitate to share your tips with me.

What is the best period to go kitesurfing toKerguelen?
We ride all year round in Brittany, especially from autumn with the arrival of beautiful depressions. Otherwise, in summer, we enjoy pretty little thermal breezes that usually show up in the afternoon.
