Las Terrenas: kite spot summary
On the Samana Peninsula, about 150 km from Cabarete in the Dominican Republic (so to the north of the DR), you will find the kite spot of Las Terrenas.
Less renowned than Cabarete, the spot receives lighter winds (from 10 to 20 knots), but offers clear and shallow water, ideal for kitesurfing.
If you go between December and mid-March, you may have the chance to see whales in the bay of Samana, where they gather every year for the mating season.
Pros: shallow lagoon – less crowded than Cabarete
Cons: less consistent wind than Cabarete
Tips:
– It takes about 3 hours by car to reach Las Terrenas from Cabarete.
– Don’t hesitate to bring your large kites (9m and up).
– From December to mid-March, many excursions are offered to go see the whales in the bay of Samana.

The spot of Las Terrenas works on the trade winds regime. It is a light wind that blows on this spot between December and late August.
