Progreso: kite spot summary
Progreso is a small beach town on the Gulf of Mexico. Due to its geography, it is one of the windiest spots in Mexico. Inland, the city of Mérida creates a local thermal phenomenon due to its warming effect.
The wind at this spot regularly reaches 18-20 knots and is very consistent. The water is usually very calm and shallow for about a hundred meters from the shore, making it ideal for beginners.
In Progreso, you can find everything you need: bars, shops, restaurants, and all the amenities for a relaxing kiteboarding trip.
Unlike the paradise-like spots in Mexico, Progreso is a town mainly dependent on fishing and its new commercial port. However, the quality of wind in Progreso and the city’s atmosphere attract visitors.
There are also many spots to discover around Progreso, offering opportunities for downwind rides and sessions in the mangroves. If the wind is not blowing, there are plenty of tourist activities to enjoy in the area, such as cenotes, nature reserves, and Mayan ruins.
