Kitesurf at Walvis Bay

Kitesurf spot in Namibia

Walvis Bay: kite spot summary

Walvis Bay is THE most famous spot in Namibia (although very uncrowded). It is located 30 minutes south of Swakopmund, right in the middle of the country (on the west coast). In fact, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund are the only two cities on a coastline over 1500 km long… Calling all lovers of freedom and wide open spaces!

The spot is surrounded by endless beaches and lagoons, perfect for kiteboarding. The main lagoon is the meeting place for kiters and windsurfers: The spot is flat, the wind comes in side-on and the water is ideal for all levels (beginners can stay upwind of others).

Although the sea is cold (15°C in the ocean), it warms up as you enter the lagoon, reaching about 22°C in summer.

You will find large expanses of green grass to launch and land your kites.

A little further on, there is the famous Speed Strip (2.5 km long, all in length). The water is completely flat and the wind is offshore. This is where some speed records have been set.

If you decide to rent a 4×4 and go on an adventure, you will find many wave spots along the coast, each more wild than the last.
