Wissant: kite spot summary
Wissant is a very well-known wave spot for windsurfers and kiters in the region, but also at the national and European level.
It is located halfway between Calais to the north and Boulogne sur Mer to the south, and is just a few minutes from Wimereux.
To get there, take the Wissant exit from the A16 motorway and allow about ten minutes to reach the parking lot.
It is often said that Wissant is the windiest spot in the North, and it is true that it often blows stronger than elsewhere, especially with a southwest wind (better wind direction), because the cape creates a kind of venturi effect (it accelerates).
It is mostly a spot for experienced riders, because when the wind is strong, it can really kick off, the waves are imposing and the bar becomes very difficult to pass quickly. Not to mention the current, which reaches record speeds! It is better to sail there when the wind remains “moderate” to enjoy the beautiful waves (otherwise it’s a real mess).
At low tide, the beach is huge which allows you to rig / launch quietly and to get away from the crowd (you can also rig in the parking lot). Generally, windsurfers line up on the left side of the bay and kiters on the right.
Beware of high tide: the beach partially disappears and it becomes really difficult to navigate because of the strong breaking waves.
Low tide is preferable (also watch out for the crowd: the spot is usually quite busy. It is important to respect the swimming area in season, marked by 2 blue flags.
Operation: The ideal wind goes from Southwest (waves) to Northeast (a bit more flat).
Recommended kite size: Difficult to generalize. Check the forecasts before going. In winter, it is usually 7/9 – in summer, 10+.
