Kitesurf at Cap Malheureux

Cap Malheureux is located at the extreme north of Mauritius. Very easy to spot, the spot is right next to a small church with a red roof that you can’t miss from the main road! You have to park near the church, and walk slightly to the north to find the spot.

In fact, you first come across a very pretty bay, with many boats at anchor. It’s not easy at all to launch from here, because of the wind shadows on one side and the boats on the other. Also, the launch area is tiny. You actually have to walk a little further (200m) to discover another bay, much more open. This one overlooks the island of Ambre, a big rock that you can’t miss.

The bay is larger, the launch area is bigger with sand and a grassy area. The spot is closed off on one side by a rocky bar, but you can either sail in front of it on a completely flat water surface, or move away by going more to the right.

This spot works best with northeast to northwest winds (more or less side depending on the wind).

It is a large lagoon in an idyllic setting, ideal for freestyle as well as freeride, but not the best for beginners.

Pros: less crowded than the southwest of the island – flat water – turquoise lagoon

Cons: less consistent wind than the southwest of the island – some rocks in front
