Kitesurf at Kalpitiya

The kite spot of Kalpitiya, in Sri Lanka, is located 2 hours north of the main Bandaranaike airport (in Colombo, the capital), in a still relatively unexplored region.

On one side of the peninsula you will find the Indian Ocean: ideal for freeride or riding the waves; on the other side: the Kalpitiya lagoon is perfect for beginners and freestylers. The immense Puttalam lagoon has a multitude of incredible spots, mostly untouched, some as flat as a mirror when the wind blows at 25 knots. Perfect for big downwind runs and organizing kite safaris several times a week.

The wind at the Kalpitiya kite spot: From May to October, the wind blows continuously with an average of 18 to 20 knots (minimum 13 knots, reaching up to 30 knots), 24/7, the conditions are simply exceptional. There is also a winter season from December to early March with wind in the afternoon, an average temperature of 28 degrees and a seasonal lagoon right in front of the Kalpitiya camp.

The water is not turquoise like in the Caribbean for example, but the conditions are really good and there are often few people in the water, which allows for great progression. Be careful of gusts in certain parts of the water.

There is not much to do right next to the spot, but Sri Lanka itself is a very rich country so you can easily go for walks, excursions, paddle without necessarily crossing the whole country. It is truly a great destination for mixing kiteboarding and discovery.
