Le Vauclin: kite spot summary
Martinique is a dream destination. Some may think that the island is overwhelmed by mass tourism, but in reality, although touristy, this gem is full of beautiful places and amazing kite spots.
It is an ideal destination for beginners in kiteboarding, and also for those looking to improve. Warm water, flat water most of the time, trade winds (therefore regular winds), white sand… It is also a perfect destination for families or non-kiters: there are plenty of things to do besides kiteboarding (surfing, paddleboarding, hiking, snorkeling, boat trips, etc.), very different landscapes (jungle, lagoons, white sand beaches, black sand beaches, islets, forests..) and the local population is lovely.
The Vauclin spot in a nutshell
The Vauclin spot (or Pointe Faula) is located in the Southeast of Martinique, near a very pretty fishing village. The place is fairly well indicated (follow “Pointe Faula from the main road, then once at the port, go to the right to the parking lot and the spot).
The spot is ideal for kiteboarding: flat water, shallow water over a large part of the lagoon, flat and sandy bottom…
The lagoon is several kilometers wide, providing a superb playground for freestyle and freeride. Beginners can progress there quietly, and advanced riders can train in a conducive environment. Only the starting area is a bit complicated: the wind is on and because of the swimming area, you have to make small runs to go upwind, avoiding beginners and other kiters who are also going upwind. Sometimes, especially if the wind is light enough, it is better to walk upwind to the exit of this area.
There are some reef waves on the barrier, reserved for experienced kiters as the coral is shallow.
The place is still quite preserved, with some nice restaurants and a friendly atmosphere. There is a large grassy area for rigging/unrigging.
Tips:
– The launching area is quite large. However, it is recommended to be close to the water to avoid hitting the coconut trees.
– The Anse Michel spot is located not far from Vauclin: it is ideal for beginners (flat spot, fine sand) and perfect for resting in the shade of a palm tree.
