Île de Kos: kite spot summary
The island of Kos is a Greek island that belongs to the Dodecanese archipelago, located just off the coast of Turkey (45 minutes by boat). It is a perfect destination for summer (strong winds blow from late June to late August). The island is truly beautiful and perfect for nice walks, whether with family or as a couple.
In terms of kite spots on the island of Kos:
– The spot of Marmari, located in the north of the island. It has a fairly long but narrow sandy beach and choppy water with strong winds (sometimes with beautiful waves when it blows really hard). The wind direction varies depending on conditions and blows very strongly. There are several facilities on this beach for renting equipment or taking lessons.
– The spot of Psalidi, in the northeast of the island, just in front of Turkey. The water is choppy and a nice swell can form when the wind is strong (up to 1.20m). The wind is offshore so not necessarily ideal for beginners (although the area just in front of the beach is quite protected). It is one of the most popular spots and there are many facilities on the beach, so if you have any problems, someone will normally come to help you.
– The spot of Kohilaki, in the southwest of the island. The wind is generally a bit weaker than in Marmari (but still blows well in the summer). The water is choppy with the wind and the area is huge, making navigation enjoyable.
The very choppy nature of the spots in Kos does not make it the best kitesurfing destination in Greece, but the destination is still superb, and the wind is consistent.
To get to Kos, you can fly from Paris to Athens (2.5 hours) and then from Athens to Kos (about 1 hour), or you can travel via Rhodes and then take the ferry.
