Kitesurf at Bali

Kitesurf spot in Indonesia

Bali: kite spot summary

Bali is the most touristy island in Indonesia, although one of the smallest in size (not counting the hundreds of islets of course). It is located in the southern part of the country, between the islands of Java to the west and Lombok to the east.

It is a very popular destination for Europeans and Australians (and others as well), for sunny vacations and mainly for surfing trips. But it can also be considered as a destination for a kite trip, especially if traveling with family (there are plenty of other things to do nearby).

General conditions – Bali kite spots

It should be noted that windy months are few in Bali: the best period is from June to September, with a preference for July and August. (be aware that it is also the high tourist season, so there are many people on the island). The wind is generally not very strong: around fifteen knots on the East side (Sanur in particular) and an average of 20 knots on the West side (Canggu).

Therefore, it is advisable to bring large kites: 9 and 12 / 10 and 14 depending on the size and conditions.

Bali (and Indonesia in general) is known for its waves. You will have the opportunity to kite on the reef most of the time, with beautiful flat areas at some spots.

The Sanur spot

The first place where kiteboarding is possible is the Sanur spot, in the southeast of the island (not far from Kuta). The wind is onshore most of the time and light (around 15 knots on average). The water is flat in the lagoon, which offers a nice area for navigation. And you can go test the reef waves on the barrier, provided you are experienced and pay attention to the tides (kiteable only at mid-tide / high tide).

You can rig / launch from the Sanur beach or from Kite Beach, right next to it. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and schools on site if needed.

The Nusa Dua spot

Nusa Dua is on the same coast as Sanur, on the southeast side, about twenty kilometers south. It is a large sandy beach with a good number of luxury hotels. You can kite in the lagoon (at high and high tide) on flat water.

There is also a downwind to do to Sanur, for the more experienced (it is better to inquire with the schools on site).

The Canggu spot

This spot is on the other side of the island, still in the south but this time on the west side. The wind blows stronger at this spot because it accelerates as it crosses the land. It is therefore side / side-off which makes it a spot reserved for experienced kiters.

The waves are generally strong and of good quality. It is better to have a good level to enjoy them.
