Marsala: kite spot summary
The kite spot of Marsala (or more precisely Lo Stagone) is the main spot in Sicily. It is located on the west side of the island, about 1 hour from Palermo. The spot is below the small village of San Leonardo, 15 minutes from the city of Marsala.
It is a huge bay, protected by small islands that almost close it off. The water is flat (about 1m deep on average), with some choppy conditions when it’s windy. You can walk far out into the water (it’s a mix of algae and sand, not really white sand like in Greece), making learning and progressing very easy.
The wind is constant and regular, blowing up to 30 knots in the summer (July/August) – you often have to add 6 to 8 knots to the windguru forecasts during the season, as it is a thermal wind. Generally, the wind starts blowing around mid-May, with ups and downs of course.
There is plenty of space to evolve and progress. There is a small beach at the spot, with no less than 17 schools in the area today. You can take lessons or rent equipment there. Access to the spot may be subject to a fee (for 5€ you can use the compressor, beach boys, and a chillout area).
Contrary to popular belief, Lo Stagone is not the only spot on the island. We will give you a brief overview of the kite zones.
Spot de Puzziteddu – South of Lo Stagnone: About 1 hour south of Lo Stagnone, this much less known spot is worth a visit. The wind is generally side-onshore. Two kitesurf schools are located there. When the wind is a bit weak at Lo Stagnone, it often blows 4-5 knots more at Puzziteddu. When the wind is light, the water is flat, and when it’s strong, there can be some nice waves. No constructions nearby except for a lighthouse. The change of scenery is worth it.
Spot de Agnone – Not tested We spent a night there, but unfortunately there wasn’t enough wind the next day to practice kite surfing. However, 5 minutes away, there is the only cable park in Sicily, for windless days.
Spot de Marina di Ragusa – The seafront wave The spot is located on the seafront, with onshore wind. The sand is very beautiful, but be careful, in the summer there may be a lot of beachgoers. Nice waves for regular freestylers. After your kite session, be sure to have an aperitif and eat tapas at the small bistro I Pupari on Piazza Duca Degli Abruzzi.
Spot de Lido di Noto – Waves that kick as we like The wave spot in Sicily. Possibility to park along the beach, the thermal wind comes in well. Waves that roll nicely and can quickly gain height in strong wind. Nice kickers for regular riders.
Spot de Tiki Beach – A Belgian runs the show The bay is beautiful, flat water, optimal in west wind and easy to park.

At Lo Stagnone spot, it is the thermals that work at full throttle. This is a type of wind that is not taken into account in the statistics, which end up being underestimated. In reality, with the arrival of sunny days and warmth, this wind starts to blow like clockwork around noon, and the wind blows on the spot almost every day.
