San Blas: kite spot summary
The kite spot of the San Blas Islands is a group of 365 islands off the coast of Panama, on the east side of the country (facing the Caribbean Sea). It is the territory of the Kuna Indigenous people, who still live in a very traditional way even though tourism is increasing.
Most of the islands are uninhabited, so it is best to book your hut in advance. Do not expect incredible comfort, as electricity is rare and the constructions are quite rustic. But the scenery is beautiful.
In terms of kiteboarding, the islands offer an incredible panorama: huge flat lagoons (as the islands are protected by the coral reef), paradise islands, translucent sea, and white sandy beaches lined with coconut trees.
It is possible to kite from a specific island, but there may be restrictions, so the best option is to kite from a cruise boat. This type of stay is becoming more and more popular.
The San Blas Islands are subject to the trade winds, which generally blow from December to April (dry season), between 12 and 25 knots.
To reach the San Blas Islands, you must take a 4×4 for about 2 hours from Panama City, and then take a canoe (about 1 hour). You must pay an entry tax to the territory, as well as various transportation fees.
